JEE Advanced 2027: Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Eligibility
Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) · conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs, by rotation, for the Joint Admission Board
JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for B.Tech, BS and dual-degree admission to the 23 IITs, conducted each year by one of seven zonal IITs. Only the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 can take it. It has two compulsory 3-hour computer-based papers, each covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; the number of questions, question types and marking scheme change from year to year.
When is JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is held once a year, usually in May, a few weeks after the April session of JEE Main.

JEE Advanced exam pattern
| Paper | Duration | Subjects | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 3 hours | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | Compulsory |
| Paper 2 | 3 hours | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | Compulsory — ranks use the total of both papers |
- The question count, question types and marking scheme are announced only in each year’s paper instructions.
- Recent papers have mixed single-correct and multiple-correct MCQs (with partial marking), numerical-answer and matching-list questions, with negative marking in some sections.
- To get a rank you must clear the subject-wise and aggregate cut-offs.

JEE Advanced eligibility
- Rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech).
- A maximum of two attempts, in consecutive years.
- Age: born within about 25 years of the exam — for 2026, on or after 1 October 2001 — with five years’ relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
- You must have taken Class 12 for the first time in the exam year or the year before, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Candidates who have already accepted an IIT seat are generally not eligible again.
How to prepare for JEE Advanced
- 1Go for depth: JEE Advanced rewards concepts that combine several chapters, not memorised formula plugging.
- 2Practise multiple-correct questions with partial marking — learn when to mark only the options you are sure of.
- 3Solve previous JEE Advanced papers under exam conditions, Paper 1 and Paper 2 back to back on the same day.
- 4Keep JEE Main and Class 12 preparation on track — JEE Main is your gate, and your NIT backup.
- 5Read the marking scheme carefully on exam day; it changes every year.
JEE Advanced FAQs
Who can appear for JEE Advanced?
Only the top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories) in JEE Main Paper 1, who also meet the age, attempt and Class 12 conditions in the information brochure.
How many attempts are allowed in JEE Advanced?
A maximum of two attempts, in two consecutive years.
Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced?
Usually yes, in some sections. The marking scheme — including partial marks for multiple-correct questions — changes every year and is printed in the paper instructions.
Which institutes use JEE Advanced ranks?
All 23 IITs through JoSAA counselling. Some other institutes, such as IISc Bengaluru, the IISERs and IIST, also use JEE Advanced ranks for selected programmes.
Is there an age limit for JEE Advanced?
Yes. For JEE Advanced 2026, general candidates had to be born on or after 1 October 2001; SC, ST and PwD candidates get five years’ relaxation. The cut-off date moves forward by a year each cycle.
