  • Set theory: union, intersection, cardinality, elementary counting, permutations and combinations
  • Probability and statistics: basic probability, dependent and independent events, averages, frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and dispersion
  • Algebra: expansions, factorisation, linear and quadratic equations, indices, logarithms, AP, GP and HP, determinants and matrices
  • Coordinate geometry: distance formula, straight lines, pair of lines, circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola
  • Calculus: limits, continuity, differentiation, tangents and normals, maxima and minima, integration (by parts, substitution, partial fractions), definite integrals and areas
  • Vectors: position vectors, addition, scalar and vector products and their applications
  • Trigonometry: identities, trigonometric equations and general solutions, properties and solutions of triangles, heights and distances

Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning

  • Questions on logical situations and on facts given in a passage
  • Series, coding–decoding, blood relations, direction sense
  • Seating arrangements, puzzles, syllogisms and statements–conclusions

Computer Awareness

  • Computer basics: organisation of a computer, CPU and instruction structure, input/output devices, memory and backup devices
  • Data representation: characters, integers and fractions; binary and hexadecimal
  • Binary arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, two’s complement arithmetic
  • Floating-point representation, Boolean algebra, truth tables and Venn diagrams

General English

  • Reading comprehension and vocabulary
  • Basic grammar: verb forms, prepositions and articles
  • Synonyms and antonyms, meanings of words and phrases, technical writing

Mathematics is at Class 11–12 level. The syllabus is published in the NIMCET information brochure each year.

NIMCET eligibility

  • A bachelor’s degree such as B.Sc, BCA, B.Com, B.A. or B.Voc (three-year) with Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects, or a B.E./B.Tech.
  • At least 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 in the qualifying degree — 55% or 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
  • Final-year students can apply if they complete the degree by the date set in the brochure.
  • Open to Indian nationals.

How to prepare for NIMCET

  1. 1Make Mathematics your priority. It is worth 600 of 1,000 marks and carries the biggest penalty (−3), so accuracy in algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry and probability decides your rank.
  2. 2Don’t skip Computer Awareness. Number systems, two’s complement, Boolean algebra and computer organisation are a short syllabus worth 120 marks.
  3. 3Practise reasoning every day with a timer — 40 questions in limited time reward speed and pattern recognition.
  4. 4Because the penalty is only a quarter of a question’s marks, an educated guess after ruling out one or two options is usually worth taking.
  5. 5Take full 2-hour mocks with the real section weights and review every wrong answer the same day.

NIMCET sample questions with answers

  1. Mathematics

    1. If log₂(x − 1) + log₂(x + 1) = 3, then x equals:

    1. A.2
    2. B.3
    3. C.±3
    4. D.9
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 3 — log₂[(x − 1)(x + 1)] = 3 gives x² − 1 = 8, so x² = 9. x = −3 is rejected because log₂(x − 1) needs x > 1. So x = 3.

  2. Mathematics

    2. The distance between the parallel lines 3x + 4y = 7 and 6x + 8y = 9 is:

    1. A.1/2
    2. B.2/5
    3. C.1
    4. D.5/2
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 1/2 — Write the second line as 3x + 4y = 4.5. Distance = |7 − 4.5| / √(3² + 4²) = 2.5 / 5 = 1/2.

  3. Mathematics

    3. A committee of 3 is to be chosen from 5 men and 4 women. In how many ways can it include at least one woman?

    1. A.70
    2. B.74
    3. C.80
    4. D.84
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 74 — All committees: C(9,3) = 84. Committees with no woman: C(5,3) = 10. So 84 − 10 = 74.

  4. Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning

    4. Find the next number in the series: 3, 7, 15, 31, 63, ?

    1. A.125
    2. B.126
    3. C.127
    4. D.129
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 127 — Each term is double the previous term plus 1: 63 × 2 + 1 = 127.

  5. Computer Awareness

    5. What is the 8-bit two’s complement representation of −20?

    1. A.11101100
    2. B.11101011
    3. C.10010100
    4. D.00010100
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 11101100 — +20 is 00010100. Invert the bits (11101011) and add 1 to get 11101100.

  6. General English

    6. Choose the word closest in meaning to “ubiquitous”.

    1. A.Rare
    2. B.Omnipresent
    3. C.Ambiguous
    4. D.Temporary
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Omnipresent — “Ubiquitous” means present or found everywhere, so “omnipresent” is the closest meaning.
